English Literature and Linguistics notes

It was a very brave nation. It was a group of three tribes: the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, but the Angles and Saxons were dominant in number. Their dialect was what's now called old English, a very different language from the English of today.

These tribes almost occupied England in the second half of the fifth century. Their reign remained up to 1066. They were the originators of English poetry and prose. It was the people who gave power to their dialect of English so that it became a language. They loved personal liberty, reputation, and beauty. They had a trend towards womanhood.

In the beginning, they started reciting poetry orally, as other nations did. They sang hymns in the grace of their gods. They also sang for the victories of their ancient heroes.

The most important poem of this era is Beowulf, which is the story of a brave warrior who kills a monster as well as a dragon. It's a unique epic that's full of allusions. The author of this epic is unknown.

Adam Bede was the first writer of Anglo-Saxon. His magnum opus is "The History of the English Church and People". Although he was the first writer of them, he didn't write in English; he selected Latin for his writings; therefore, he can't be labeled as the first poet of English. Instead of Bede, the first English poet is Caedmon. It was he who wrote in English for the first time. He wrote a series of poems named 'Charms'. After Caedmon, another important poet of this era is Cynewulf. He and his followers also wrote a series of poems named 'Exeter’s'. The poetry of that era was unrhymed. You can say it was a kind of blank verse poetry.

It was the age in which English prose was invented. The great king Alfred was the originator of English prose. Firstly, he translated some pieces from Latin to English, and then he also wrote his own pieces in English. Along with the king, the other important name in the prose writing of that period is Aelfric, who was a priest. He wrote a series of his sermons in English.
